Alberta Baptist History

On March 6, 1921, 25 people held an organizational meeting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. McGee for the purpose of organizing a church. Eleven of them constituted the charter.

The area was near the intersection of Huntsville Highway, now University Boulevard, and what was then named Holt Road, now called Kicker Road. There were three stores with living quarters attached near that intersection and about a dozen houses within a mile of the stores. Mrs. G. B. Wright owned one nearby property; her given name was Alberta thus“Alberta’s City”.

Immediate efforts were made to start a building. Each person subscribed (pledged) as God led. Work started in May of that year and the members felt that it was good to have a part in founding a House of the Lord. And they worked.

They ended that year with 15 members, grew to 62 the next year and within 10 years had 236 members. Church membership doubled to 576 in another 10 years and to 851 ten years after that. They far exceeded the capacity of the original wood frame building during these years and the Sunday School overflow met in nearby stores and homes.

In 1947 a building fund was established and the new sanctuary was complete enough for worship in June 1951. The church continued to grow as the east and west wings were built, and for the first time in over 25 years every Sunday School class met under the same roof in 1957. Construction continued to include a north wing and a Christian Life Center in 1974.

Today members come from all over Tuscaloosa County to worship as Alberta Baptist. We continue to be an anchor for Alberta City. We are grateful to God for His leadership and provision over these years and we pray for His leadership as we follow Him.
